Torres Release Record Fields
A complete Torres inquiry should ask for the actual release date, release type, unit of release, release certificate, incarceration history, and TDCJ and SID numbers. If the person entered supervision, request the public status that distinguishes parole or mandatory supervision from discharge. Do not substitute a projected date for the actual event. If the response shows a transfer, preserve the receiving unit or authority exactly as recorded. These fields create a clear sequence from Torres custody through processing to the documented destination.
Torres Release Status Lines
TDCJ publishes several contact routes because a case changes hands as release review advances. General locator information is available at 936-295-6371 or 800-535-0283. Before a vote is complete, the Board review status line is 844-512-0461. After a favorable vote, Review and Release Processing uses 512-406-5202 for release status. Staff generally need the exact TDCJ or SID number, or an exact date of birth, to avoid a mistaken match.
A release plan can change when a proposed address fails review or a required service has not been arranged. Special conditions may affect placement as well. These steps do not alter the sentencing court's judgment, but they can affect when and where physical release occurs. Record a scheduled location only as a current processing field and recheck it close to the planned date.
The sentencing court remains the source for the judgment behind the calculation. Use the conviction county and court shown in the offender detail, because a person housed at Torres may have been convicted anywhere in Texas. Medina's court portal applies only when Medina was the filing jurisdiction. Pairing the judgment with TDCJ's certificate separates the legal sentence from the later physical release event.
Torres Unit Release Paths
Ruben M. Torres Unit is a Texas Department of Criminal Justice Correctional Institutions Division men's prison in Region IV. It is not a Medina County Jail annex. TDCJ Classification and Records calculates time and release information for people held there. The Medina Sheriff, county jail line, and IVSS-Counties cannot establish a Torres release merely because the prison stands near Hondo.
Leaving Torres may mean an internal transfer, program placement, parole, mandatory supervision, maximum-expiration discharge, or movement under another authority. Parole is conditional release approved by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles before the sentence ends. Mandatory supervision is a separate statutory release form that combines time served and applicable credits, subject to eligibility and, for many cases, Board review. Discharge at maximum expiration ends the sentence. Only the record can distinguish them.

Confirm a Torres Unit Release
Begin at the official TDCJ Online Inmate Search. Search by TDCJ or SID number when available because names can collide. A name search should be narrowed with supported demographic fields. Open the likely record, then compare age information, conviction county, offense, sentence, and unit before relying on it.
- Record the current facility, TDCJ number, SID number, offense, county, sentence, projected date, and maximum sentence date exactly as labeled.
- Check parole eligibility or review information and any scheduled release date or scheduled release location that has been posted.
- If the person disappears from the current-only locator, contact TDCJ rather than treating the empty result as release proof.
- After a favorable Board vote, use Review and Release Processing at 512-406-5202 for status.
- Confirm community supervision through TDCJ IVSS and the assigned Parole Division office.
The public locator says it covers people currently incarcerated in a TDCJ facility, with working-day information at least 24 hours old. A former inmate may therefore stop appearing. That absence cannot supply the actual release date or type. Request those facts through the TDCJ inmate-information channels and the release certificate.
Torres Release Date Labels
A Projected Release Date is a calculation by CID Classification and Records. It reflects the governing offense, offense date, sentence structure, time served, applicable good-conduct time, and eligibility rules. It is not a promise. The Maximum Sentence Date is the calculated end of the sentence. A Scheduled Release Date appears later in processing and may be accompanied by a scheduled location.
Misconduct, forfeited credit, a new sentence, detainer, judicial correction, Board action, required program, or release-plan review can change the posted date. TDCJ audits the file after receiving a release certificate and warns that a scheduled date may change even on the planned day. Call Torres before arranging pickup. The unit front desk can address local operations, but it is not the authoritative office for an individual's sentence calculation.

Torres Unit Official Profile
The official Torres Unit directory places the prison three miles west of Hondo. TDCJ reports that it opened in January 1993, has a capacity of 1,384, and houses G1, G2, and G4 custody levels. Those are state custody classifications, not categories in a county jail roster.

Torres Pre-Release Programs
Torres publishes CHANGES/pre-release instruction, reentry planning, literacy and cognitive programming, and vocational opportunities. CHANGES is a TDCJ pre-release curriculum intended to prepare participants for transition. These offerings make the unit locally distinctive, and program status can matter when a Board decision contains a program condition.
Participation or completion is context, not proof that release occurred. Some favorable institutional parole decisions, often shown as FI votes, can require a named program before processing continues. A program graduation date is not the physical release timestamp. Verify the later release certificate, scheduled information, IVSS event, and supervision activation before concluding that the person entered the community.
The Review and Release Processing office reviews proposed residence, release county, required programs, and special conditions. A favorable vote can still be followed by plan work or a changed schedule. This is why the Board result, program record, and actual release record should remain separate.
Torres and Medina Custody
Medina County holds three correctional facilities with separate record systems. Torres and the Joe Ney Unit are TDCJ prisons. The Medina County Jail is operated by the Sheriff. A person can leave the county jail for TDCJ, or leave Torres for another TDCJ unit. Neither movement alone is a community release.
Always place the agency and facility beside the event. If a Medina jail record says “TDCJ,” continue with the state search. If the Torres record shows another unit, state custody continues. If it shows parole or mandatory supervision, use TDCJ IVSS and the Parole Division office. Medina County falls within the San Antonio I District Parole Office assignment in the researched directory, but assignments can change and should be checked live.
Request Torres Release Records
For basic information, email pia@tdcj.texas.gov with the full name, seven-digit TDCJ number, and exact date of birth when known. TDCJ describes the routine inmate-information response as free. It may provide location or status, current and prior incarceration offense information, conviction county and court, and projected date. That mailbox does not provide photographs.
For the actual release date, release type, release certificate, unit of release, incarceration history, or departmental identification photograph, use the formal TDCJ Public Information Act route. TDCJ policy identifies departmental ID photos as public records available on request, subject to lawful limits.
